PHANTOM ROCK

The Phantom Rock is a famous and beautiful skull shaped rock structure located in Wayanad, which is a major attraction to tourists and visitors. This is an exquisite piece of natural art, and is a unique spot of beauty. The local name of the phantom rock is Thalappara, and is located on Cheengeri Mala, which is accessible at a distance of 26km from Kalpetta. The rock is located at an elevation of 2600 m above the sea level and is surrounded greenish valley. This is a favorite destination for trekkers and backpackers, and also for nature lovers who like to have a retreat into the nature.

KAANTHANPARA WATERFALLS

Kaanthanpara Waterfalls is a beautiful waterfalls located at a distance of 22km from Kalpetta town. This is an ideal vacation destination for families and children, and the waterfalls and its surroundings offer a peaceful and relaxing ambience to those who love the nature. The nearest railway station is at Kozhikode, which is about 73 km from Kalpetta, and the nearest airport is Calicut International Airport, which is about 86 km. The waterfalls can also be accessed at a distance of 9km from Meppadi town. The entire waterfalls and its surroundings are covered by plantations and forests.

KARLAD LAKE

Karlad Lake is one of the less known attractions of Wayanad. This is the second largest fresh water lake in Wayanad district, which is spread over an area of around 7 acre land area. The lake is located at a place called Tariod, which is at a distance of 16km from Kalpetta. The place is very serene and relaxing, and is an ideal visit for those whom love nature and its peace and beauty! The main attraction is that this is not a busy tourist spot, and therefore will be quiet and promising to visitors who wish for such an ambience.

AMBALAVAYAL HERITAGE MUSEUM

Ambalavayal Heritage Museum is a famous archaeological museum located in Wayanad, which has a large collection of ethnic and tribal artifacts of the ancient tribes and civilizations that existed in this region. The artifacts of the heritage museum date from the 2nd century AD, and are a treasure of the heritage of human civilization. The museum is a great attraction to archaeologists, historians, students of anthropology, and even the ordinary visitors and tourists alike. Some of the items and artifacts include clay sculptures, stone weapons, crude bow and arrows, etc.

EDAKKAL CAVES

Edakkal Caves is a natural wonder in the heart of Wayanad, which shows the traces of early human inhabitation and artistic depictions and engravings. This is a consort of two natural caves at a remote location on the top of Ambukutty Mala at an altitude of 1200 meters above the sea level. The cave has the famous pictorial engravings which is dated at least 6000 BC, pointing to a prehistoric civilization which settled in this region. From the paintings, it is suspected this settlement has some possible connection with the Indus Valley civilization.

MUTHANGA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is yet another wildlife sanctuary located in the Wayanad district, which is similar to the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary in its inhabitance of wildlife species, and the nature of activities. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is established in the year 1973, and is a part of the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu forest department. The entire sanctuary area is a part of the protected forest area and is conserved in accordance with the lifestyle and general habiytual nature of the endogenous tribal living in the region. Various species of animals such as the deer, birds, monkeys etc. freely roam in the region

THOLPETTY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the major Wildlife sanctuaries in Wayanad, Kerala, and inhabits a wide range of dfifferent kinds of animal and bird species endogenous to the Wayanad hills. The Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of 20 km from the Manathavady town, and can be accessed from Thirunelli via the Kodagu road at a distance of 13 km. The jeep safari is one of the main attractions of the sanctuary, which takes around 3-4 hours, and is conducted two times a day, 7am to 9am, and 3pm to 5pm. Guides from the forest department will accompany each tour.

THIRUNELLI TEMPLE

Thirunelli Temple is an ancient Mahavishnu temple which is famous for its historicity and tradition. It is located on the Brahmagiri hill at an altitude of around 900m. The temple is surrounded by majestic looking mountains and beautiful forests. The temple is accessible from the Mananthavady town at a distance of 32km. Another major attraction of Thirunelli Temple is the presence of Papanasini River which flows around 1 km from the temple surroundings. The water of this river is believed to possess superb medicinal qualities due its flowing through various medicinal herbs, roots, flowers from the Brahmagiri hills.

KURUVA DWEEP

Kuruwa Dweep is a unique uninhabited island which lies about 17 km east of Mananthavady Town and 10 km North West of Pulpally town. This island is home to rare species of animals, birds, flora, fauna, herbs, and other plant and animal biodiversity. The island has a peculiar geographic structure which sustains the inhabitance of its unique species of animals and plants. The island is surrounded by beautiful lakes and streams. Recently the tourism department of Kerala has identified Kuruwa Dweep as one of the most visited tourist destinations in Kerala.

CHEMBRA PEAK

Chembra Peak is arguably the highest peak in Wayanad, located at a height of at 6,730 ft above the sea level. It is a part of the Western Ghats, and is a very beautiful mountain peak which attracts the tourists and trekkers. One of the main attractions of the Chembra hills is a heart shaped lake which lies on the way to the Chembra peak. The specialty of this lake is that it is believed to have never dried up. Currently permission from Meppady forest office is required for trekking to Chembra Peak due to Maoist insurgency.
